Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 Automatic Black Strap Black Dial Watch

Great watch but the WR30M could be an issue for some ...5

Seiko offers two similar versions of a mechanical "military" watch:

The SNK809 (which is black but there are other colors). This has a 21 jewel movement (generally the 7S26B but the earlier models have the 7S26). It has a 36mm case (excluding the crown) and18mm wide band.

The other model is the lager SNZG15 (which is black but there are other colors). This has a 23 jewel movement (generally the 7S36B but earlier models have the 7S36). It has a 40mm case (excluding crown) and an 22mm band.

Both of these watches are gray market. You won't see them for sale in US stores.

I've owned my SNK809 for several months and love it. Its very accurate for the price. Mine gains about 5 sec/day. You'll have to spend a lot of money to do better than that in the mechanical watch world.

Two of my friends own the SNZG15 and they seem to gain about 10 sec/day. Note: The fact the SNZG15 has 23 jewels doesn't mean its more accurate than a 21 jewel movement. It's larger pushes more mass (bigger hands) and thus I speculate is inherently less accurate than the smaller SNK809.

I got my SNK809 on eBay for $45 + $25 shipping (2009). However it was shipped from Hong Kong. It had to clear customs shipping takes about three weeks and has more inherent risk. I'd expect to pay more on Amazon if it was shipped from within the US. Similarly I've seen the SNG15 for as little as $105 with free shipping shipped from Singapore.

What I did not appreciate at the time I bought my SNK809 is that its water resistant rating is 30 meters (WR30M). 98 ft. That seems sufficient unless you're a serious scuba diver right?

Wrong.

Look up water resistant ratings for watches on Wikipedia.

30 meters is the static water pressure for the test conducted in the ratings lab. The working/dynamic pressure rating will be much less. You should not even shower wearing a WR30M watch let alone swim with it. WR30M is considered splash resistant only. I have splashed my watch it still runs great but depending upon your lifestyle this may or may not be an issue.

The bigger SNZG15 is rated at WR100M which you can swim and skin dive with. The smallest rating you should swim with (but no skin diving) is WR50M.

The other aspect of the SNK809 you should be aware of is that its smaller than most watches are today. In the 1960's an 18mm band was typical. Today its small aesthetically particularly for a person with large wrists.

When I first got my SNK809 I was taken aback by how thin the band looked (and I have smaller than average wrists). I have read the market Seiko is targeting with this model is teenagers in Asia. That market base probably has smaller wrists than the average American male.

But after wearing it for awhile I noticed I wasn't banging it into things like I do with my larger watch. And it fit under my shirt sleeves better.

Its notable that my friends say the 22mm SNZG15 is a bit bigger than they wish it was.

I've concluded I like the 18mm band. I'm an outdoorsman (when I can be) and do wish the SNK809 was at least WR50M. Other reviewers will say they wish it had a hacking mechanism or a sapphire crystal. Those are not issues for me and for the price let's get real.

This is a phenomenal mechanical watch for what you'll pay. I wear mine to work every day. I wear it to meetings and snicker to myself as my second hand moves at six clicks per second while others sitting at the table suffer the one second lurch of the ubiquitous quartz movement. Yes I'm a watch geek. Just be aware of the smaller width of the band and WR30M rating. If those aren't big issues for you you can't beat it.More detail ...

Seiko Men's SNA411 Flight Alarm Chronograph Watch

A Modern Mechanical Jewel5

I bought this watch for myself for Christmas 3 years ago and still love it.

At the time I really wanted a Breitling Navitimer Fighter but they were selling for around $3000 and I knew I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around with thousands of bucks on my wrist.

I happened on this watch on Amazon and was immediately taken with it. Let me say that the photo does not do this watch justice. When I received the Seiko I was surprised that it had much more sparkle than this photo imparts. And what really impressed me was that the face has great depth to it. The photo on Amazon shows a flat black surface with a mishmash of white lettering all over it but in reality it looks much more like a mini metal Roman Colliseum with raised sides and a recessed center plain under thick glass. The face is about 3/8" thick. Very substantial and classy looking. Also there is more contrast between the shiny center of the wrist band next to the flat silver sides than this photo indicates.

I wore it to work one day and a female coworker remarked"your watch is gorgeous!" and that she was looking for one like it for her husband. And when I told her the price she couldn't believe it.

The Breitling Navitimer is a beautiful watch but since owning this Seiko Chronograph I rarely ever think about owning a Breitling. And since Navitimers now sell for over $6000 I feel even better about the $475 Seiko I got for $200.More detail ...

Seiko Men's SRN023 Coutura Kinetic Retrograde Watch

Looks is not everything3

Seiko Men's SRN023 Coutura Kinetic Retrograde Watch is a fine time keeping machine. In about two weeks since I've had it the watch was too fast only by 4 seconds relative to the internet time. It takes very moderate amount of movement to keep its battery charged. True it looks very nice and catches the other people's eye. There are though couple of important things I definitly do not enjoy as much as its ability to be a very good time keeping instrument. I have problem reading time at a reasonably quick glance. The face is way too busy with wide and long 5-minute marks and with unjustifiably large and bright what Seiko ironically calls the watch "retrograde" for - the day dial. When both hands are over this dial it takes quite some time and strains my eyes to recognize which hand is which especially when they are close one to another not to mention when they are even partially one over the other. The minute hand is much narrower than the hour hand and has a very sharp end which is barely distinguishable when the hands are close together and the more so when they are over the day dial. I think that both the minute hand and the second hand could be made a tiny bit longer. Another thing I definitely do not like and have hard time using is the little date window because it is way too small the date dial is imbeded too deep and the numerals are too small especially when two numerals are to be displayed there - very hard to read. All in all we carry a watch to SEE the time and other things on the watch face without having to spend too much time for this and straining our eyes. Add to this being in a not so bright lighting environment and you would start thinking about buying another watch and puting this one on the other wrist as a decoration -:))) However excelent a watch is as a time keeping instrument it has got to be convenient practical and easy to use. Prior to this watch I had another Seiko watch that served me better than well over quarter a century but it had a perfect lay out of the white face also with the calendar on it.More detail ...

Seiko Men's SNAB65 Alarm Chronograph Leather Strap Watch

Stylish sporty and elegant5

I own this watch my first seiko.

This watch has a combination of classic(classy leather strap) and sporty design(Sexy black dial). Looks good with dresses and casuals alike.

I got this watch after looking for this combination for a lot of time. I m happy that I got this one much cheaper than I expected to pay for a watch like this.

Somehow it looks much better on my wrist than my friends who is fairer.

Hope you will like it too.

Just an update after more than an year of usage! No scratches on the watch the leather strap as good as new and I wear it everyday! This must say something about the quality!More detail ...

Seiko Men's SKX781 "Orange Monster" Automatic Dive Watch

Seiko Orange Monster Automatic Dive Watch5

Bought the watch from Amazon Sunday evening and it arrived on Thursday evening with the 5-day delivery service. I've had it for a few days and I am extremely happy with it. I also own a Rolex Submariner Breitling Chronomat Omega Seamaster Chrono Citizen Nighthawk and some assorted Casios and Timexes. This Seiko automatic watch ranks just a hair below the $2000+ Swiss watches but for under $200 it's an unbelievable value. The quality and workmanship are excellent for a price in this range. For example the second and minute hands line up exactly with the hash marks; when the second hand hits 12 the minute hand is algined precisely with the minute hash mark. Wow I've seen $1000 Swiss quartz watches that don't do that. The assembly of all the components look top notch. The rotating bezel has a precision feel and the click-stops align exactly with the hash marks on the dial. The alphanumeric markings Lumbrite markers and hands appear of high quality. Seiko's cost savings is in the omission of hacking of the second hand but slight backwards pressure does stop it for setting the time. Also the black-on-white day and date although easy to read appears to be imprinted on cheapy white plastic. The bracelet has solid stainless steel links but the weight and chrome finish are slightly on the budget side. The watch appears to run fast by about 1 second each day which is pretty good for a mechanical watch since I had a Timex quartz with an analog face that ran fast by about the same increment. I love the orange face and chrome bezel with recessed black painted numerals and hash marks. The watch supplied by Amazon came with a Seiko box instructions and warranty and does not appear to be a gray market watch. I saw the watch for cheaper on eBay but they were coming from overseas so I paid a few bucks more from Amazon located in the US. All in all I am very satisfied with this Seiko watch and Amazon service.More detail ...

It's a really nice one.5

Rather than an alarm it has an additional dial to extended the stopwatch range to 100 minutes. The tachymeter markings on the bezel are deeply engraved so they won't scratch off. The crystal is sapphire to prevent scratching. The band has a mix of brushed and polished segments that is nicely done. The buckle is hidden when the band is closed; it looks like continuous links all the way around. It looks and feels like a very high quality item. It's nicer than I expected when ordering it.More detail ...

Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 Automatic Black Strap Black Dial Watch

Great simple watch5

I bought one of these a couple years ago in Singapore. I love it. It is my staple everyday watch. They are tough and withstand a fair bit of abuse. I wore mine while training and flying aerobatics up to 6Gs. Still works. The movement does tend to be fast some say by 5 to 15 sec per day. My experience is that I notice it is running fast by a few minutes every little while and then I correct it. Not an issue especially since it is an automatic watch. If I go more than a day without wearing or shaking it it stops anyway so who needs longterm accuracy?

I love it. I'm buying a second one in dark green. ...May start a collection.More detail ...
